Hunting Snake vs the Cockroach Essay
Discuss the following poems, Hunting Snake and The Cockroach, commenting in particular on the ways in which the poets depict their respective creatures. The poems ââ¬ËHunting Snakeââ¬â¢ by Judith Wright and ââ¬ËThe Cockroachââ¬â¢ by Kevin Halligan are both very metaphorical in their comparisons between creatures and humanity. Both poems are about animals in an undisturbed environment and their subsequent interaction with human beings, and a language feature that is common in both poems is an extended metaphor. The ambiguity of the title in ââ¬ËHunting Snakeââ¬â¢ is quite important. It is impossible to differentiate from the title alone whether it is the snake being hunted, or if it is the snake which is doing the hunting. Similarly, the title of ââ¬Å"The Cockroachâ⬠gives no further details to the poem apart from the obvious fact that a cockroach will feature prominently. This allows the reader a greater range of interpretation Both poems can be seen as representations of humanity. Judith Wright was born in Australia and held an intense fascination of the countryside and the indigenous Aboriginal people. It is perhaps no coincidence, then, that her poem may hint at aspects of Australian life. The black snake could be seen to represent the Aboriginal people, whilst the people who see this snake may represent the English colonisers who came to inhabit Australia. They both fear and revere the snake ââ¬â not only do they appreciate its dangerous beauty, but at the same time they treat it as a wild animal. This is a potential metaphor for the racial divide between the Aboriginals and Englishmen which still exists to a limited extent even today. Meanwhile, ââ¬ËThe Cockroachââ¬â¢ explores human nature ââ¬â first hinted in the fact that the cockroach is described as being ââ¬Å"giantâ⬠. This idea is then developed through personification ââ¬â the verbs ââ¬Å"traceâ⬠, ââ¬Å"jogâ⬠and ââ¬Å"circleâ⬠are all normally associated with human behaviours. These actions could be a metaphor for the restlessness of human nature. Despite the cockroach being described as ââ¬Å"quite satisfiedâ⬠, it soon tires of this monotony and chooses to move on and begins to ââ¬Å"jog in crooked ringsâ⬠. This could represent how we as humans are easily bored of our lives, and instead of being content with what we have we always want more. A cockroach is normally viewed as a repulsive animal ââ¬â people are normally very eager to kill it if they happen across one in their household.

Effective Teaching Strategies for Students with ADHD Essay
1. What is the purpose of the study? To share methods of intervention for students with ADHD. 2. When was the study done? 2011 3. Who did the study? George DuPaul 4. What are the research question and hypotheses (if any)? Which school-based intervention strategies are the most effective? Hypothesis: Multiple treatment strategies implemented consistently across multiple years will improve success for students with ADHD. 5. Does the literature background support the need for the study? Please explain your answer. The background literature defines ADHD, explains that these students have issues with retention, attendance and standardized tests. This information provides justification for exploring the topic of effective interventions. 6. What are the variables under study? Identify them as independent, dependent, moderator, control. The independent variables are ADHD and the dependent variable is 7. What is the setting, sample, population? 8. Identify the type of research. Descriptive, non-experimental. 9. What statistical procedures are used, if any? None were used. 10. What kind of design was used? Is it appropriate to the stated purpose, research questions and hypotheses? Since this is a descriptive article, it does not apply any research design nor does it explain the basis of selecting the particular ââ¬Å"effectiveâ⬠strategies. The provision of several strategies does, however provide a variety of effective strategies to implement, which supports the opening statement, that it takes consistent implementation of multiple effective strategies for successful intervention with ADHD students. 11. What are the findings of the study? As stated above, the study impresses that it takes consistent implementation of multiple effective strategies for successful intervention with ADHD students. 12. Are there any problems with the internal validity of this study? The fact that the students are from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background and that the control and experimental groups were selected at random increases my confidence that there is internal validity. 13. Are there any problems with the external validity of this study? It is not possible to say that this study necessarily applies to the population because it was only conducted in one classroom. If there was a more robust sample from a variety of schools I would feel more confident applying this to the whole population in general. 14. What can be validly concluded from this study? The fact that there is no explanation for the choices that were made for ââ¬Å"effectiveâ⬠strategies leads me to say that this paper is merely descriptive of options, not necessarily of the most effective interventions for ADHD.
The Need for a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Dissertation
The Need for a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan - Dissertation Example 11). While it might be difficult, and sobering, to convince a reluctant boss that consideration must be given to keep all of their employees safe form violence while on the job, it is certainly worth the effort. To begin, it is helpful to point out some real world examples that bring the problem a little bit closer to home. Consider a bank, where tellers are on the frontline of ealing with the public on a daily basis, with thousands (in some cases much more) of dollars in their grasp. Without a violence prevention program in tact, an unsuspecting teller, and the public at large, can quickly become the victim of a violent act of grave proportions. There are many types of businesses that have a propensity towards violence occurring in the workplace. Consider any business that has its primary function being various interactions with the public. By the sheer nature of having unsecured people entering the office or place of business on a daily basis, all employees and an unsuspecting publ ic are put at risk. To not have some type of prevention effort in place to ward off possible attacks, management and owners are simply doing a disservice to the very employees that have devoted their working lives to the company. This is not to mention the customers who have a basic assumption that they are safe during the time that they are in a place of business. The management and owners owe it to the very customers that make them money to keep them relatively safe from harm in every way possible. Owners need to be aware of the risks, and cannot simply adopt a ââ¬Ëthis will not happen usââ¬â¢ mentality. A firm example of this can be seen in a company that utilises armoured trucks to transport money and various precious metals around major cities all across the United States. Such employees literally put their lives on the line to protect that which they are transporting, yet they all too often become victims of violent crimes. Without an adequate plan of workplace violence prevention, the drivers and guards would be left at a loss for which protocols to follow when they are under threat (Bruce & Nowlin, 2011, p. 294). Yet, almost all such companies do have a violence prevention plan in place. Naturally, such a plan does not work in every case, unfortunately, but they have thwarted many a violent attack in the past, and will continue to do so in the future. The owner who simply says that their business is not subject to violent attacks, such as the one described in this example, is missing the point. Any business that has any number of employees is, at some point, vulnerable to an attack. Consider any transportation company. Their drivers would be under the risk of attack from criminals who would seek to rob them of their merchandise. Any employee, working alone or with a partner, that is off site for any part of the work day is in a dangerous position and should have some kind of protection to ward off a possible violent attack that might occur. It is not only businesses that work with the public that are subject to violent attacks either. Consider the recent attacks at post offices, tax agencies, and general office

Online poker Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Online poker - Research Paper Example shall be taken care of by the provision of online poker as it aims to provide a more secure setting for gambling and consequential feuds, vendettas and other illegitimate participatory activities. The most significant advantage, however, is vested in the fact that poker rakes will bring large amounts of revenue to the government. The revenue generation is steadily building over the years and it is not surprising that the gambling profits for the government are almost doubling over a period of every five years which makes online poker a very promising arena for revenue generation. Furthermore, the expansion of the poker during recent times such as improved disposable earnings giving customers additional time for relaxation and entertaining activities and the altering socio-demographic traits have worked as stimulants to customer using money on poker and other gambling activities reassuringly make it a sound ground for government

Investigation of the conventions of behavior that governed aristocrats Essay - 1
Investigation of the conventions of behavior that governed aristocrats at a symposium and those of marginals as well as the conventions of thought that characte - Essay Example This is a thesis proposal that seeks to investigate whether such norms were really prevailing or not among those considered within the paperââ¬â¢s scope, the last being small and limited. The cynics of ancient Greece traced back their roots to Socrates though one of his pupils, Antisthenes (Hock, Undated). Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the actual propounder of this school of philosophy is one Diogenes of Sinope (404-323 B.C.) (Hock, Undated). From Diogenes Laertius it is known that Diogenes fled to Athens when his father, a banker, started adulterating money. There he met with Antisthenes and inducted some of the philosophical thought his teacher was heir to from Socrates. Thereafter he started leading what the cynics construe as a truly virtuous life ââ¬â doubling up his cloak, carrying a begging bag for his food and eating and conversing wherever he could (Hock, Undated). He believed that ââ¬Ëthe minimum is the optimumââ¬â¢ ââ¬â the cynic philosophy put in a nutshell (Hock, Undated). This may be taken as a very brief introduction to cynicism and a lengthier version of the background to cynicism will become available later in the paper. Hereafter the paper shall contrive to use some incidents or anecdotes, called chreiai in Greek, from Diogenesââ¬â¢ own life and some from his close disciple Crates (358-290 B.C.) (Hock, Undated) to bring out the essence of this thesis proposal. It shall also use some supplementary texts to do this. The essence of cynicism is that the minimum of life is the optimum to live with (Hock, Undated). The extent to which the initiators ââ¬â Diogenes and his students such as Crates ââ¬â involved their personal lives with this minimalist philosophical precept is evidenced from their rigorously frugal life-styles. Diogenes even forsook the perusal of his drinking cup, which he took out of his begging bag and threw away, when he saw a boy drinking water with his bare hands

Can terrorism be defeated Discuss in terms of both the military and Essay
Can terrorism be defeated Discuss in terms of both the military and non-military responses to the threat - Essay Example These conflicting opinions are now in the process of ripening and it is hoped that it will not be long before they find their application in practical terms. Discussion Older theorists have proposed that terrorism can be defeated if certain principles are followed. Terrorists often win because we respond to terrorism the way terrorists want us to respond. If our response is not in accordance with the terrorist's will, they fail to achieve their objective. So, it should be realized that the choice is ours. If we can learn to refuse to act upon the will of terrorists, we can hope to defeat terrorism, although we cannot always prevent it (Fromkin, 1975). Such ideas have dominated the minds of intellectuals of the past, but keeping in mind the present scenario of the world, we can infer that such ideas are far from reality. The previous two decades have seen a rise in the tendency to control terrorism using the military approach. The idea of intervening within states for the resolution o f military conflicts appeared prominently in the international scenario in the early 1990s, when in the Gulf war and later in Cambodia the international community played its role (Snyder, 2008). Subsequent years have seen a surge in such military measures and a collective effort on part of many countries to contain terrorism and limit it to its origins. They have, however, resulted in a growth of terrorist activities across the world, let alone stopping its spread. Our recent experiences of waging war against terrorism have only made us realize some bitter realities of the life. Most modern discoveries in neuroscience, anthropology, human evolution and paleoethnology have favored the idea that Homo sapiens are not inclined towards killing others of their own species. The similarity between a 'killer in uniform' and a 'killer without uniform' is striking. Both have to be fed with 'hatred' in the process of de-humanizing them, during which they are trained to overcome their natural te ndency to allow others to 'live' (Ram & Summy, 2008). Such discoveries have led us to believe that the military approach is, in fact, not the solution to the problem of terrorism. Theorists of insurgency have focused on the element of preserving public sympathy during military actions to gain benefit after takeover of states. Similarly, an indirect approach to contain insurgency, which is termed the 'hearts and minds' approach, emphasizes the need to gain public support by political means (Snyder, 2008). Such observations have favoured the non-military approach for the solution of terrorism. Democracy is considered by some to be the solution for terrorism. This may be true in some cases, but again it has its own limitations. In many European states where democracy is the rule, a number of terrorist groups have emerged, which not only fail to comply with the norms of democracy for their own expression but also use democracy as a tool to augment their deleterious activities (Snyder, 2 008). Such observations have led us to believe that perhaps, the non-military approach is too 'soft' for terrorism oriented mentality. So, the lesson learnt during war on terrorism is that terrorism cannot be defeated; instead, it can only be attenuated, reduced and controlled to some degree. Unrealistic hopes of completely sweeping

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - Essay Example The spoilt tower blocks can be seen not so far away in the pleeblands. Then further away, he can see the wrecked compounds where the learned and elite people used to live. This place was at one time the best place for rich men and women. There used to be a variety of activities in this place that is now wrecked beyond repair (Atwood 10). As Snowmanââ¬â¢s world has changed, so is the climate of this environment. It has changed to the extent of creating abrupt storms that are extremely dangerous to the world. The heat levels of this environment have risen steadily and are intensely hot. Snowman uses a pair of sunglasses with only one lens to protect himself from these dangerous climatic conditions. He is exposed to dangerous monsters, and this makes him and his family and friends to be pathetically vulnerable to the monsters that were created by the human beings. He has to protect his family and his friends from these monsters; hence this leaves him to correct the mistakes that they did while making these monsters (Atwood 15). The name, Snowman is an ironic name that refers to the unpleasant creature that is widely remembered from the North American childhood not so long ago. The main character in this novel adopted this name from his past dealings with the Crakers. Craker was a group of people that were genetically modified, and they seemed to with stand any type of storms that was facing Snowman and his family and friends. They can with stand any kind of catastrophe that hit the world as they had extremely strong genes. The name Crakers was derived from the name Crake. Crake was an old friend to Snowman, and he was the one who invented the Crakers in an experiment that he performed in secrecy to develop a new race of people that could be able to with stand the sexual urges, the religious aggression and generally the aggression that is in the world. The Crakers are infantile they are multicolored, and the racism has been bred out of their culture. They regard Snowman as their mentor they also have gotten the ability to cure minor sickness and infections by sending out vibrations that helped cure people in the world that had no hospitals and was spreading all over the world at an extremely high rate. The Crakers are exceedingly polite, naive, they are not able to be jealous or violent, and they have the strange way of mating as a ritual. Snowman tells them where they came from and how they were created. He also explained what happened to their creator Crake. As the novel continues, Snowman tells how his past life was like he says about his life as Jimmy. This is done in what seems to be like in the late twenty first century. The arrogance of the human kind had led to distortion of the world and the climatic conditions of the world had gone all wrong. Mankind had managed to make holes in the atmosphere and had managed to melt the polar ice caps they had managed to desert the continents and filled the coastal cities. In Pleedlands, where t he majority of the people had moved to was filled with crimes, illness that made life to be terribly difficult for all the people who lived there, the parents of Jimmy who was scientists were living in grand estates that had elegant homes and ultra luxurious in that case. Life in these estates was a predictable one since people could work with schedules there were guards everywhere to guard these people and this made the life somehow truly easy for
